Guann-Ming Industrial (G.M Reels) is a plastic reel manufacturer in Hsinchu, Taiwan, established in 1990. For overseas customers, we build the 13" SMD carrier-tape reel as a tool-free three-piece assembly — two flanges plus one central hub that ship flat and snap together by hand. The result: exporters cut ocean-freight volume by roughly 60% without buying any welding or assembly equipment.
01Why ocean freight punishes one-piece reels
Ocean freight is billed by volume, not weight. SMD carrier-tape reels are large-volume, low-density plastic parts — a fully molded one-piece reel is mostly empty space. Shipping it across an ocean means, quite literally, paying to ship air. The unit price of a reel is typically modest, yet the container-volume cost of moving it internationally can rival or exceed the part itself.
02The three-piece, tool-free reel
The idea is simple: instead of one solid molded reel, the reel is split into two flanges and one central hub — three separate parts. They are injection-molded individually, stacked flat for shipping, then assembled at the customer's site.
Assembly is tool-free. The parts align and snap-lock together by hand in seconds — no ultrasonic welder, no press, no special jig. Once assembled, the reel is dimensionally and functionally identical to a one-piece reel: it winds carrier tape and feeds on pick-and-place lines exactly the same way.
03The numbers — 13" reel (Ø 330 mm)
Using a 13" reel as the example, each reel occupies about 0.011 m³ including packaging (330 × 330 × 100 mm). Loading the same 40-foot container:
| Metric | One-piece reel | Three-piece assembly |
|---|---|---|
| Reels per 40 ft container | ~5,000 | ~12,000–13,000 |
| Relative shipping volume | 100% | ~40% |
| Ocean-freight volume saved | — | ~60% |
| Assembly equipment needed | None | None (hand snap-lock) |
For a customer shipping 10,000–100,000 reels per month, that ~60% volume reduction translates into substantial annual savings on ocean freight and container space.
04Customer-side assembly in three steps
- Receive flat. Flanges and hubs arrive stacked flat, minimizing carton volume.
- Snap the first flange to the hub. Align and press until it locks — no tools.
- Add the second flange. The reel is complete in seconds, ready to wind carrier tape.
05Two wins, not one
Beyond freight, the flat-pack format lets your warehouse stock far more spare reels in the same shelf space. You balance logistics cost and line availability at once — lower inbound freight, and more buffer stock on hand for production continuity.
06Reel specifications
