Tooling a plastic injection mold — from the moment you hand over a drawing to receiving production parts — takes roughly 30–45 days. But many people are unclear about what happens in between and what they themselves need to prepare, and end up stuck in repeated back-and-forth confirmations that stretch the lead time. 01Why understand the flow before tooling

A mold is a one-time investment; revising it once is expensive and time-consuming. Understanding the flow first tells you what to confirm at each gate and what to prepare, minimizing the number of round trips — the key to saving both money and time.

02The five-stage flow, about 30–45 days

1. Drawing / sample submission (D+0) — You provide a .STEP / .IGS / .DWG file, or a physical sample. We confirm feasibility, evaluate, and quote.

2. Mold design (D+7) — Engineers complete the 3D mold design, fixing the runners, ejection mechanism, parting line and draft angles.

3. Tooling and trial (D+25) — The mold is built and T1 (first trial shot) runs, producing the first batch of trial samples.

4. Sample confirmation (D+35) — You perform OQC, confirming the T1 samples' dimensions, appearance and function; any issues mean mold rework and re-trial.

5. Production and shipment (D+45) — After sample approval, mass production and shipment proceed.

03What you need to prepare at each stage

The drawing stage is most critical: have your 3D file or physical sample ready, mark the key dimensions and tolerances, settle the material (PS / HIPS / ABS), color, electrical requirements and estimated volume. The earlier these are clear, the smoother everything downstream.

The trial stage: prepare your OQC inspection criteria first — which dimensions are critical and what level of appearance is acceptable. Clear criteria make T1 confirmation fast.

04Factors that affect lead time

  • Part complexity: slides or not, number of cavities, mold size
  • Whether the material is in stock: special electrical grades or colors must be purchased separately, adding 7–14 days
  • How many rework rounds after trial: the clearer the spec, the fewer reworks — this is often the biggest lead-time variable

05Three tips to reduce tooling risk

  1. State the drawing and tolerances clearly, and mark the key dimensions. Not every dimension needs to be tight; what matters is marking the ones that truly affect function.
  2. Settle material and electrical properties early. Material shrinkage affects the mold design, so the later you change, the bigger the impact.
  3. Freeze the spec before tooling. Whether T1 lands right the first time hinges on whether the spec is finalized before tooling — confirm first, then tool; don't tool and change at the same time.
