02Two-piece assembly explained
The concept of the two-piece reel: split a one-piece reel into two independent flanges and one hub — three separate plastic parts. The customer then assembles them into a complete reel using ultrasonic welding or a mechanical snap-lock.
Assembly process
- Separate injection molding — two flanges + one hub individually molded
- Flat-stacked for shipping — flanges stack flat, minimizing volume
- Customer-side assembly — aligned then joined with an ultrasonic welder or snap-lock
- Wind carrier tape — functionally identical to a one-piece reel
The role of ultrasonic welding
Ultrasonic welding is the mainstream method for joining plastic parts — 20–40 kHz high-frequency vibration generates frictional heat at the joint, locally melting and re-bonding the plastic. Advantages:
- High joint strength (can reach 80%+ of parent material)
- Fast (2–5 seconds per reel)
- No consumables or solvents
- No visible seam on the exterior

03Strength testing — does it really survive ocean shipping?
The most common customer question: is the structural strength of two-piece assemblies sufficient? Will they come apart or deform during ocean transit? Our 36 years of experience says: when properly designed, strength is equivalent to one-piece molding.

The energy settings of the customer's ultrasonic welding equipment affect final strength. Guann-Ming provides recommended welding parameters (frequency, time, pressure, amplitude). Incorrect settings may result in insufficient or excessive weld strength.

Most EU/US SMT customers — complete analysis for engineers and procurement teams.s choose one of the following two assembly approaches:
Option A: Assemble after receiving
- Requires a customer-side ultrasonic welder (basic models NT$100K–300K)
- Best for high-volume, steady-use customers — saves shipping cost
- Requires operator training and a QC process
Option B: Pre-assembled shipping
- Guann-Ming completes ultrasonic welding before shipping
- Larger shipping volume, but zero burden on the customer side
- Best for small orders, first orders, or sample testing

For domestic (Taiwan / China) or air freight scenarios, the cost advantage of two-piece assembly is less significant — air freight charges by weight, so volume matters less. So:

Can two-piece reels be reused?
Yes, but weld strength decreases with each disassembly. We recommend treating the weld as permanent — do not disassemble after winding carrier tape. For reusable applications, the mechanical snap-lock design is available at a slightly higher cost.
How to choose an ultrasonic welder?
Guann-Ming recommends a 20 kHz, 1500–2000W welder with a matching fixture. Several Taiwanese manufacturers offer these (e.g., Branson, Herrmann, and local brands). Japanese and US brands are also common choices.
We don't have ultrasonic welding — can we use the snap-lock design?
Yes. Some G.M Reels models feature a snap-lock mechanism — customers can manually assemble without ultrasonic equipment. Joint strength is slightly lower than the welded version; suitable for air freight or domestic use.
Beyond shipping cost savings, are there other benefits?
Yes. Two-piece reels also offer lower inventory costs — customers can stock flanges and hubs separately for flexible assembly. Custom mold costs are also distributed; only one piece needs to be modified to change specs.
