How to calculate parts per reel from pocket pitch, usable tape length and reel diameter; includes a quick-reference capacity table for 7"/13"/15" reels and common pitches.

01Why you need to calculate reel capacity

During purchasing and production scheduling, a common question is: "How many of this part fit on one reel? How many reels do I order?" Looking only at the reel size (7", 13", 15") is not enough, because what really determines the count is the pocket pitch and the usable carrier-tape length. Getting the capacity wrong leads directly to under-stocking or excess inventory.

02The calculation formula

The basic formula for the number of components per reel:

Parts per reel = (usable tape length − leader − trailer) ÷ pocket pitch (P1)

Three key variables:

  • Pocket pitch (P1): the distance between the centers of two adjacent pockets, commonly 2 mm / 4 mm / 8 mm / 12 mm. The larger the component, the larger the pitch usually is.
  • Usable carrier-tape length: determined by the reel outer diameter, hub diameter and tape thickness — the larger the outer diameter and the thinner the tape, the greater the total length that can be wound.
  • Leader / trailer: the empty tape reserved at the start and end, which must be subtracted from the total length.

04Worked example

Assume a 13" reel, 8 mm tape, pocket pitch 4 mm, with a usable tape length of about 21 meters (21,000 mm) and a combined leader + trailer of 600 mm:

(21,000 − 600) ÷ 4 = 20,400 ÷ 4 = 5,100 pcs

Rounding down, this reel holds about 5,100 pcs. For a different pitch, just swap the denominator to recalculate quickly.

05Purchasing and production notes

  • Ask about pitch before reel size: on the same reel, 2 mm vs 4 mm pitch can differ by a factor of two in part count.
  • Plan packaging per reel: parts per reel determines how many reels ship at once and how many moisture-barrier bags (see the MSL moisture-control guide) to prepare.
  • Avoid mixing lots on one reel: keep different lot numbers off the same reel for traceability and quality control.
  • Reel selection: high volume of a single part number suits 13"/15" large reels; prototyping or multiple part numbers in small quantities suit the 7" reel.

FAQ

Why does the same 13" reel hold very different counts?

The key is the pocket pitch (P1). The smaller the pitch, the more components fit per unit length and the higher the count; tape thickness and pocket depth also affect the total windable length on a reel.

How much should I subtract for leader and trailer?

EIA-481 requires an empty leader at the start for feeder threading (commonly 400 mm or more) and a reserved trailer at the end. Subtract both before calculating the usable component length.

What if the capacity comes out as a decimal?

Round down to a whole number, because less than one full pitch cannot hold another component. In practice a small tolerance margin is also kept conservatively.
