01The Unsung Hero of Modern Electronic Assembly
In today's fast-paced world of automated Surface-Mount Technology (SMT), the efficient transport and precise placement of electronic components is critical to the production line. The unsung hero that carries these tiny components and keeps them intact through transport and feeding is the plastic reel and its carrier-tape system.
02What Is an SMT Plastic Reel?
A plastic reel works together with carrier tape and cover tape to form a complete automated packaging system. Its core job is to provide structural support during storage, transport and automated feeding, protecting components from vibration, impact and static damage.
Guann-Ming focuses on the reel body itself — six sizes from 4" to 15" (4 / 7 / 10 / 11.25 / 13 / 15"), 8–56 mm band width, in one-piece and tool-free three-piece snap-lock designs, in PS / ABS material.
03Why the EIA-481 Standard Matters
In the global electronics industry, EIA-481 (Electronic Industries Alliance) is the key standard for automated component packaging. It strictly governs:
- Dimensions & tolerances: tape width (8mm to 120mm), pocket pitch and the reel's outer diameter and arbor hole — ensuring every brand of pick-and-place machine docks precisely.
- ESD protection: components are easily damaged by static, so compliant reels must offer stable anti-static or conductive properties.
- Cover-tape peel strength: governs the peel force range, preventing line jams or component drops.
04Our Advantages & Applications
Guann-Ming's plastic reels strictly follow the EIA-481 standard, using high-rigidity, high-anti-static materials that reduce placement throw rate and improve line yield.
- Main applications: active / passive components (resistors, capacitors, inductors), IC chips, LEDs and various micro-sensors.
