How a reel runs on the SMT line

Once a plastic reel is loaded, everything — from tape feed and cover-tape peel to pick and place onto the PCB — depends on dimensional accuracy and smooth feeding. The animation below runs the whole flow, and shows why a reel's precision directly drives line speed.

01 · FEED

Tape Feed

The reel feeds the carrier tape into the placement machine, sprocket holes engaging the feeder tooth by tooth. Tape width and pitch follow EIA-481 so material feeds smoothly without jams.

02 · PEEL

Cover-Tape Peel

Before picking, the cover tape is peeled back and taken up, exposing the components in the pockets. Peel force must be stable — too tight tears components, too loose drops them.

03 · PICK

Nozzle Pick

The nozzle aligns to a pocket and lifts the component. This step is most sensitive to reel precision — wobble or pitch drift and the nozzle misses.

04 · PLACE

Place on PCB
